Anthologies: From Mother Goose to Dr. Seuss

I received From Mother Goose to Dr. Seuss as a Christmas gift, back when children's illustration was not yet the reality it is for me today (but was certainly a brightly growing glimmer in my eye). My stepmother-in-law gave it to me. Since she also works in children's, the book made sense as a gift, from her to me, on many levels. The book was published in 1999, and at 10 years old and countless anthologies clogging my book shelf later,  it is still one of my very favorite children's art anthologies. The book showcases not only some stellar art 100+ years old, but it also shows the book cover design or otherwise showcases the art in it's "final use" design or product. Whether this was done by design or necessity, seeing the art in it's final, to-consumer state gives the reader the added gift of gauging design trends of the time. To me, it adds so much more inspiration to the book overall  (as if the art itself weren't inspiring enough!)

You can pick this up for a song on Amazon resellers (literally -- I see two copies selling there for $0.39 cents!). Beautiful book, and I can't recommend it highly enough. A great history lesson for modern-day children's illustrators and children's book designers alike.
