What's New? Something Old.

I've had some new ideas for an old project. I've been stretching out of my picture-book comfort zone a little lately and working on ideas for a mid-grade novel.

The illustration above is a doodle from several years ago when I thought the story might be an animation. That was when I was so impatient to start the art part of a project that I never really took the time to work out stories first. Needless to say, not many projects got finished back then.

Now I know I work best if I let ideas brew over time. This one was stirring again in my brain the other day, so I decided to dust it off and play with it a bit more.

With enough time, it may yet see the light of day.

What's New?

Presently, I'm illustrating a story for Pockets magazine. I'm sketching roughs this week. My favorite stage of the process! I try all kinds of poses until I find one that works best for the client, the story and me. I have fun with the leftover sketches too! They're great for trying new painting techniques, using in promos, or saving for another assignment.

Weekly Theme: "What's New?"

I'm illustrating two books at the moment, both for toddlers/preschoolers, and having a great time doing it. I still like to make time (if possible) for smaller, more personal paintings when I can. Here's a little one I just finished of my “Dino-boy”.
